Supervisor
Name: Karen Shockley, MS, LCPC
Phone:  312-890-6600
Email: karenshockley1@gmail.com
Address: Lombard IL
License: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Degree: MS Clinical Counseling
Education: MS Clinical Counseling, Benedictine University 2004; BA Psychology, Wheaton College 1989
Professional Experience: I have 15+ years experience working as a clinician. Currently and for 10 years I have been in private practice part- and full-time. I worked in a college counseling center for 10 years (6 years as director) providing individual therapy as well as crisis intervention, supervision to staff clinicians, outreach and education. For my first 3 years post graduate school, I worked as a staff therapist at a diagnostic shelter for adolescents. I worked exclusively as a clinical supervisor for 2 years for graduate school interns in a college counseling center. As an educator I have 4 years experience as adjunct faculty teaching undergraduate psychology courses, both in-person and on-line. Prior to my career in counseling, I worked in corporate management, quality control for customer service, and marketing.
Areas of Specialization:
I work mainly with late adolescents and young adults through older adults. I have extensive experience with college populations, and LGBTQIA clients. I have worked with a diverse population with a wide variety of issues, but areas of specialization include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related issues, suicidal ideation, self-harm, relationships, women's issues, life transitions issues, stress, and self-esteem. I utilize many modalities including but not limited to CBT, behavioral, DBT, ACT, solutions-focused, and client-centered.
Supervision Style and Philosophy
I take a collaborative approach to supervision, and my role is multi-functional as educator, counselor and consultant, sharing learning experiences with each other. I work to foster a non-judgmental, culturally aware, and supportive environment with an informal style and open atmosphere. Each clinician has an individual process by which they gain professional skills, clarify their counseling style and identity, and develop the self as the best tool for clinical work. This process is exciting and challenging, and I enjoy helping newer clinicians on their journey.

I believe that everyone deserves a safe and non-judgmental space to focus on themselves and their career goals. The goal of clinical supervision is to prepare you to handle complex mental health issues as you develop and strengthening your skills as a clinician. I strongly believe clinical supervision is meant to be a reflective and educational process. Although the supervision meetings are not preparation for your license exam, the consultations will help you to build your confidence and knowledge which will assist with the exams. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to provide clinical supervision that provides education in all areas of counseling.
