Addressing Advanced Issues in Supervision:
Resistance, Impairment, and Psychological Stress

(6 CEs)

September 8, 2022

Location: TBA

        Presenter: Dr. Toni Tollerud

Description:

Sometimes the supervisory relationship does not go smoothly. Supervisors must be prepared to go beyond basic supervisory skills to address difficult situations when they arise and challenge their role. This workshop will focus on advanced skills needed by supervisors regarding difficult supervisees and the issues they bring to supervision.  First it will explore prevention strategies supervisors can use to avoid difficult situations before they develop. Further it will identify typical problems encountered in the supervisory relationship and recommend strategies supervisors can use to address these concerns. Issues include anxiety, resistance, conflict, incompetency, impairment, psychological stress, and transference/countertransference. Handouts will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of participating in this workshop, professionals will:

  • Learn important prevention strategies needed at the onset in supervision to clarify expectations and reduce opportunities for difficult situations to surface
  • Consider steps in role induction with supervisees
  • Review a model for due process in supervision
  • Consider the ethical implications in working with difficult clients
  • Define and indicate ways to identify impairment
  • Review strategies to address difficult supervisee behaviors when they arise
  • Consider the impact of resistance in supervision
  • Define a model for dealing with psychological stress and strategies to help supervisees through it
  • Review the impact of possible transference and countertransference in supervision
