Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) assists clients in developing a vision of a better future and in directing both clients and therapist toward a deeper awareness of the strengths and resources that clients can use in turning vision into reality.
SFBT is the pragmatic application of a set of principles and tools, best described as the direct route to what works. If something works (better), do more of it; if something isn’t working, stop and do something else. The emphasis is on constructing solutions as a counterweight to the traditional emphasis on the analysis of problems. SFBT is a competence-based approach, which minimizes emphasis on past failings and problems and instead focuses on clients’ strengths, previous successes and exceptions (times when the problem could have happened but somehow did not).
SF questions lie at the heart of SFBT: they invite clients to think differently, to notice positive differences, and to help make desired changes.
The concept and methodology of SFBT differ from traditional (problem-focused) therapies, but may also be combined with them. Conversations become more light-hearted and shorter, ensuring that SFBT is cost-effective and there is less burnout amongst professionals.
In this one-day workshop the theory, solution-focused questions and many practical tools are introduced which you can use as a therapist to help clients to create a new and better life.
After the workshop the attendants will be able to:
- change their focus from what is wrong to what is right with their clients and from what isn’t working to what is working in their lives;
- use (more) SF questions and refine their own practice;
- build positive emotions and hopeful and optimistic conversations;
- invite clients to envision and reach their preferred future;
- motivate clients to change.
